5.2.1 Quantum
Quantum theory represents one of the most profound shifts in our understanding of the universe. It emerged from the pursuit to comprehend three confounding phenomena unexplained by classical theories: the blackbody radiation problem, the photoelectric effect, and the discrete spectral lines of atoms. This new quantum paradigm, rooted in discrete energy levels and probabilistic descriptions, transformed our understanding of the microscopic realm, providing answers to these enigmas and reshaping the landscape of physical theory.
The blackbody radiation problem
The blackbody radiation problem originated from the study of the radiation emitted by idealized perfect absorbers called “blackbodies”. A blackbody is an object that absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation, regardless of frequency or angle of incidence. After absorbing this radiation, a blackbody also becomes a perfect emitter. The radiation it emits is characteristic of only its temperature, not its shape or material, hence the term “blackbody radiation”.
Around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, experimentalists, with improved techniques, were able to measure the spectrum (i.e., the intensity as a function of frequency) of the radiation emitted by blackbodies at different temperatures. The challenge was for theoreticians to explain these experimental results. Their classical solution, known as the Rayleigh-Jeans law, worked well at low frequencies (long wavelengths) but predicted that the emitted energy would become infinite as the frequency (or equivalently, the wavelength) became shorter. This clearly incorrect prediction led to what was termed the “ultraviolet catastrophe”.
Max Planck ultimately resolved this phenomena by making a radical assumption: energy, at the atomic level, instead of being a continuous quantity, could only be emitted or absorbed in discrete packets or “quanta”. He introduced the concept of the quantum of action, with a constant now known as Planck’s constant.

The photoelectric effect problem
The photoelectric effect problem arose from observations of the behavior of certain materials when exposed to light. The basic phenomenon is as follows: when light shines on certain materials, particularly metals, electrons are emitted from the material.
According to classical wave theory of light, the energy of a light wave is proportional to its intensity, not its frequency. So, it was expected that a more intense light (even of frequency below the threshold) would have more energy and thus should be able to eject electrons. But that wasn’t the case.
The instantaneous emission of electrons, even in dim light of frequency above the threshold, was also counterintuitive. Classically, one might expect that the material would need to absorb the energy from the light over some time before it accumulated enough energy to emit an electron.
Einstein’s Explanation:
In 1905, Albert Einstein provided a theoretical explanation for the photoelectric effect by building upon Max Planck’s quantum hypothesis. Einstein proposed that light could be thought of as consisting of packets or quanta of energy, now called photons. The energy \(E\) of each photon is proportional to its frequency \(ν\):

Einstein’s theory proposed:
1. An electron can absorb energy from only one photon.

Einstein’s explanation of the photoelectric effect using the photon concept was one of the key experiments that supported the emerging quantum theory. The mystery of spectral lines of atoms is another cornerstone in the development of quantum mechanics.
When a gas is heated or subjected to an electric discharge, it emits light at specific wavelengths, producing a spectrum. When this emitted light is passed through a prism or diffraction grating, it’s separated into distinct lines, known as spectral lines. Each element has its own unique set of spectral lines, effectively serving as a “fingerprint” for that element.
There are two main types of spectra:
- Emission Spectrum: Bright lines on a dark background, representing wavelengths emitted by the substance.
- Absorption Spectrum: Dark lines on a bright background, representing wavelengths absorbed by the substance.
Classical physics, using the theories available at the time, couldn’t explain why atoms emitted or absorbed light only at specific frequencies. Especially puzzling was the regularity and simplicity of the patterns, particularly for hydrogen.

In 1913 Bohr proposed a quantived model of the atom, where electrons move in specific orbits, and each orbit corresponds to a specific energy level. Electrons could “jump” between these orbits by emitting or absorbing a photon whose energy corresponds to the energy difference between the orbits.

Louis de Broglie (1924)
Classical physics depicted light as a wave but experiments (like the photoelectric effect) showed it had particle-like properties too. Could the reverse be true for matter, known to be particulate? De Broglie hypothesized that particles like electrons could exhibit wave-like properties. He postulated the relation: \( \lambda = \frac{h}{p} \) where \( \lambda \) is the wavelength, \( h \) is Planck’s constant, and \( p \) is the momentum.
Wave-particle duality became foundational for quantum mechanics, leading directly to Schrödinger’s wave mechanics and the development of electron diffraction experiments that confirmed de Broglie’s hypothesis.
Werner Heisenberg (1925)
The old quantum theory, especially Bohr’s model, couldn’t satisfactorily address issues like the anharmonicity of vibrational spectra or explain the intensity distribution in spectral lines.
Heisenberg developed matrix mechanics, representing observable quantities as matrices rather than numbers or functions, leading to a non-commutative multiplication.
This formulation introduced the fundamental quantum concept of non-commutativity, leading directly to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.
Uncertainty Principle
One of the fundamental tenets of quantum mechanics, it states that certain pairs of physical properties (known as complementary observables) cannot both be precisely measured simultaneously. The most commonly discussed pair of these properties is position (\( x \)) and momentum (\( p \)).
The equation for the uncertainty principle, when considering position and momentum, is given by:

This equation tells us that the product of the uncertainties in position and momentum will always be greater than or equal to half of the reduced Planck constant. In other words, the more precisely we know the position of a particle, the less precisely we can know its momentum, and vice versa.
Heisenberg originally framed the uncertainty principle in terms of a relationship between the precision of a measurement and the disturbance it creates. This means, the act of measuring a quantum system can change its state. Later, the principle was reformulated in terms of standard deviations of repeated measurements, which is the form most commonly used today.
Erwin Schrödinger (1926)
While matrix mechanics was a breakthrough, it wasn’t intuitive. De Broglie’s ideas on wave-particle duality suggested a wave description of quantum systems. Schrödinger developed wave mechanics, described by the Schrödinger equation: \( i\hbar \frac{\partial \psi}{\partial t} = \hat{H} \psi \) where \( \psi \) is the wave function, and \( \hat{H} \) is the Hamiltonian operator.
The wave function \( \psi \) allowed probability interpretations of quantum states. This approach provided insights into atomic orbitals and chemical bonding. It was also shown that matrix mechanics and wave mechanics were equivalent descriptions.

Here’s an overview of Cantor’s contributions to the development of set theory:
Definition of a Set: Cantor started with a simple but formal definition of what constitutes a set. He defined a set as any collection of definite, distinguishable objects of our intuition or thought to be conceived as a whole. In other words, a set is a collection of items that can be thought of as a single entity.
Cardinality and Ordinality: Georg Cantor’s set theory introduced two distinct ways to conceptualize the “size” or “magnitude” of sets: cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers. While both concepts are central to understanding the nature of infinity in set theory, they address different aspects of sets.

- The cardinality of a set refers to the “number of elements” in the set. Two sets have the same cardinality if their elements can be put into a one-to-one correspondence without any elements left over in either set. Cardinal numbers are used to compare the sizes of sets. Sets as Logical Objects: At the heart of logicism is the belief that mathematics is just an extension of logic. Set theory, with its abstract notions of collections and membership, provided a framework within which mathematical objects (like numbers) could be conceived as logical entities. A set, in this view, isn’t a mathematical object but a logical one — it’s defined by a property that its members satisfy.
Natural Numbers and Sets: Russell, influenced by earlier work by Frege, aimed to represent natural numbers using sets. The idea was that the number 0 could be identified with the empty set, 1 could be identified with the set containing the empty set, 2 with the set containing the empty set and the set containing the empty set, and so on. In this way, every natural number was associated with a specific set.
Paradoxes and Logic: Set theory, in its naive form, ran into paradoxes. Russell himself discovered one such paradox, now known as Russell’s Paradox.
Russell’s Paradox
Discovered by Bertrand Russell in 1901 in the wake of Georg Cantor’s groundbreaking work on set theory. Cantor’s theory allowed for the creation of any definable collection, or set. However, this unrestricted approach led to problematic sets like \( R \), which cannot consistently exist. challenged the then-prevalent notions about sets and brought about a crisis in the foundations of mathematics.
The Paradox:
The paradox arises when one considers the set of all sets that do not contain themselves as members. Let’s call this set \( R \). If \( R \) is a member of itself, then by definition it shouldn’t belong to the set of sets that do not contain themselves. Conversely, if \( R \) is not a member of itself, then it should belong to \( R \). This creates a contradiction, and the paradox is that \( R \) cannot be consistently defined without running into this contradiction.
Crisis in Foundations: The paradox highlighted an inconsistency in the “naive” set theory, which was the prevalent approach to set theory at the time. Mathematicians and logicians realized that if foundational theories like set theory had such contradictions, then potentially large portions of mathematics could be undermined.

This theory doesn’t just describe “how sets work,” but it provides a foundational framework on which almost all of modern mathematics is built, ensuring rigor and consistency. In ZFC, the unrestricted comprehension principle (which states that any definable collection is a set) is replaced by the Axiom of Separation. This axiom only allows for the creation of subsets from already existing sets based on some property. This restriction prevents the construction of problematic sets like \( R \).
Influence on Logic and Philosophy: Russell’s paradox didn’t only influence mathematics; it had ramifications for philosophy and logic as well. Russell himself, along with Alfred North Whitehead, attempted to build a logical foundation for all of mathematics in their work “Principia Mathematica.” They introduced the “theory of types,” which is a hierarchical structure for sets where a set can only contain sets of a lower “type” to avoid self-referential paradoxes like the one posed by \( R \).
5. **Further Investigations:** The paradox stimulated investigations into the very nature of truth, definability, and paradox in formal systems. 4. **”Principia Mathematica” and Set Theory**: In collaboration with Alfred North Whitehead, Russell wrote “Principia Mathematica,” a monumental work aimed at grounding all of mathematics in logic. They used a modified version of set theory that incorporated a “type theory” to avoid paradoxes. Every set was assigned a type, and sets could only contain elements of lower types, ensuring no set could contain itself.
5.2.1 Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem
Kurt Gödel’s incompleteness theorems fundamentally altered the understanding of formal systems in mathematics. The core method Gödel employed is rooted in self-reference and a kind of mathematical cleverness. Here’s an overview of his approach:
1. **Gödel Numbering:** Gödel began by assigning to every symbol, statement, and sequence of statements in the system a unique natural number, known as its “Gödel number.” This was done in a systematic and recursive manner, such that arithmetic operations on these numbers would correspond to syntactic operations on the statements they represent.
For example let’s imagine a very simplistic formal system where there are only three symbols: \( S \) (for “successor”, similar to adding one), \( 0 \) (zero), and \( + \) (addition). In this system, we can write statements like \( S0 + S0 = SS0 \) (which corresponds to the arithmetic fact \( 1 + 1 = 2 \)).
We’ll assign a unique prime number to each symbol: \( S \rightarrow 2 \), \( 0 \rightarrow 3 \), and \( + \rightarrow 5 \).
– A sequence of symbols, like \( S0+ \), would be encoded as the product of these prime numbers raised to successive powers: \( 2^1 \times 3^2 \times 5^3 = 2 \times 9 \times 125 = 2250 \). So, the Gödel number for the sequence \( S0+ \) would be 2250.
2. **Encoding Statements About Statements:** Using this Gödel numbering, Gödel was able to create statements that reference other statements, or even themselves. This allowed him to make meta-mathematical claims within the system of mathematics itself. Using a more advanced version of the above scheme, Gödel could create numbers that represented more complicated statements and sequences of statements, including quantifiers and logical operations. By employing this system, he could construct statements that refer to other statements or even to themselves.
3. **Constructing the Gödel Sentence:** Gödel then cleverly constructed a specific statement (known as the Gödel sentence, \( G \)) which essentially says of itself, “This statement is not provable.” If \( G \) is provable, then it is false, which is a contradiction. If \( G \) is not provable, then it is true, which means there exists a true statement in the system which cannot be proved.
– To build the self-referential Gödel sentence, Gödel crafted a statement that essentially says, “The statement with Gödel number \( x \) is not provable,” and then found a way to embed this statement within its own description, creating a self-referential loop.
– This is a bit like the “This statement is false” paradox but rendered within the formal mathematical system using Gödel numbering. If the statement is true, then it’s unprovable within the system. But if it’s provable, then it’s false.
4. **First Incompleteness Theorem:** Using the above self-referential construction, Gödel demonstrated that for any consistent, formal mathematical system that can encode basic arithmetic, there are true statements (like \( G \)) within that system that cannot be proved using the rules of the system.
5. **Second Incompleteness Theorem:** Building on the first theorem, Gödel showed that if a formal system (like the aforementioned one) is consistent, then its consistency can’t be proved within the system itself.
In essence, Gödel ingeniously used the system’s own rules to highlight its inherent limitations. He turned the formal system against itself by crafting statements that reveal its shortcomings, showing that there are inherent limits to what can be proved within any given system that is capable of basic arithmetic.
5.2.1 Wittgenstein

Ludwig Wittgenstein is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century, especially in the realm of philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. His work is characterized by two distinct phases: the early Wittgenstein, which primarily revolves around his work “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus,” and the late Wittgenstein, focused mainly on his posthumously published “Philosophical Investigations.”
Early Wittgenstein: “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus”
Language and Reality: In Wittgenstein’s view, the world consists of facts, not things. Among these facts, some are simpler and cannot be decomposed further. These indivisible, basic facts are what he refers to as “atomic facts.” They are the foundational building blocks of reality. Atomic facts are configurations or combinations of objects. An object can be thought of as something with certain properties and capabilities to interact with other objects in specific ways. In this sense, objects are the potential constituents of atomic facts, and the atomic facts are realized when objects are combined in a particular arrangement. Wittgenstein proposed that the structure of language reflects the structure of reality. The world, according to the “Tractatus,” consists of a set of atomic facts, and language is built of atomic propositions corresponding to these facts.
Picture Theory of Language: One of the central ideas of the “Tractatus” is the Picture Theory of Meaning. According to Wittgenstein’s picture theory, a proposition represents or “pictures” a possible state of affairs in the world. Just as a picture of a scene represents that scene by having elements that correspond to parts of the scene, a proposition represents a state of affairs by having elements (symbols) that correspond to parts of that state of affairs (objects). For a proposition to have meaning, its structure must correspond to the possible structure of an atomic fact.
